CAL FIRE/Perris reports staffing increases, new rescue squads and rising call volumes in 2024

CAL FIRE Division Chief Mark Scoville presented the Perris Fire Department’s 2024 annual report and highlighted increases in staffing, apparatus and call volume.
Scoville said daily staffing increased from an average of 7 personnel to 11, with a rescue squad added to the downtown station in February 2024 and a second rescue squad placed in service in October 2024. He reported the arrival of a new Quint (a combined engine/aerial apparatus) for North Perris Station 90 in May 2024. Typical daily staffing for apparatus was described: the engine is staffed with a captain, an engineer and a firefighter; the quint is staffed with a captain, an engineer and two firefighters; the rescue squad is staffed with an engineer and a firefighter‑paramedic.
Scoville described a notable increase in calls in 2024: a total call volume of 9,394 calls, including 6,932 medical aids (an increase of about 600 medical calls over 2023), approximately 755 traffic collisions, and 628 false alarms. He said the department had averaged 6.4 calls per apparatus per day in 2024, down from an earlier year average that exceeded internal thresholds; the new rescue capabilities and apparatus are expected to improve response capacity.
The chief also noted progress on a planned South Perris fire station (land secured and in design with STK Architecture) and said data collection and staffing results will help guide resource planning.
Council thanked the fire leadership and noted the department’s expansion as a public‑safety priority. The item was presented as an annual update for council receipt and filing.
