Council committee moves forward grant appropriations, including $2.7M for Streets to Home initiative

Controller Abby Hansen said the grants cover multiple departments. Highlights included: a federal Department of Transportation grant to the Office of Finance and Management; $500,000 from an opioid fund for Medicaid-assisted treatment in jail; a $50,000 federal transport-van grant for the sheriff's office; approximately $200,245 in gun-lock funding through a drug-free Marion County program; $780,000 in philanthropic funds for a winter-contingency public-health program; reimbursement funding for fire department Task Force 1 deployments; and a $2,700,000 grant for the Department of Metropolitan Development’s Streets to Home initiative, led by the mayor’s leadership council on homelessness to rapidly place unhoused neighbors into permanent housing with supportive services.
Councilor Gibson, who serves on the mayor’s Leadership Council, said Streets to Home would help house an estimated 350 individuals in the program’s first phase and urged support. Councilor Nelson echoed the need to use sustained opioid-fund revenue strategically to address homelessness and said he hoped the city would make long-term commitments where possible.
Committee members approved forwarding the grant appropriations to full council.
