Board holds first hearing on elementary boundary change moving new homes into Washington Elementary zone

The Washington County School District Board held a public hearing May 12 on a proposed elementary boundary change that would move a small new subdivision into Washington Elementary's attendance area.
Nate, a district planner, described the proposed change: it would move the area north of the Virgin River to Telegraph Drive and the homes east of Florence Drive (including property behind newly built Ash Apartments and the Worldwide Sun Resort) from Horizon Elementary into the Washington Elementary boundary. He said the change affects approximately 20 homes on Desert Cactus Drive and that no district students currently live at those addresses.
The board noted this is the first hearing. District staff said they had held an earlier neighborhood meeting at Washington Elementary to solicit comment but no residents attended. Nate said the district will hold a second public hearing in June as required by district notice procedures.
Why it matters: attendance-boundary adjustments affect where children enroll and can shift student counts and transportation routes for individual schools. Board members and staff said this proposal seeks to "clean up" boundary lines for a newly developed road and does not affect current students.
The hearing generated no public comments; the board did not take a final boundary vote at the May 12 meeting.
