The Chandler City Council on May 8 approved the consent agenda for the meeting, covering items 1 through 11, and heard a string of local announcements about upcoming events and a large private development in the city.
A council member moved to approve the consent agenda; another council member seconded the motion and the council voted to approve the package with no recorded objections. The motion was recorded as: "I move to approve the consent agenda of the 05/08/2025 regular meeting items 1 through 11." The clerk announced, "Motion carries unanimously." Mayor Hartke was logging on and his audio vote had not been registered at the time of the vote.
The council then received brief statements from members announcing community events and local developments. Council member Poston described recent work by the Assistance League of the East Valley, noted the group is a volunteer-run nonprofit that operates a thrift shop supporting city programs, and invited residents to learn more of their work.
Council member Poston also announced the grand reopening of the Tumbleweed Recreation Center on May 17; the event is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon and will include a ribbon cutting, open house, games, vendor booths and giveaways. Council member Orlando urged residents to participate in the city—s once-in-a-decade general plan process, saying the city has started committee work and will host a public "Chandler Talks" event on May 10 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Chandler Center for the Arts. Orlando said an online questionnaire will remain open through June at chandleraz.gov/generalplan.
Council member Harris reported on a tour of Carvana—s vehicle reconditioning campus in Chandler, saying the site spans nearly 100 acres, includes more than 5,000 parking spaces and is expected to create about 200 new jobs (with roughly 100 positions already active). Harris encouraged colleagues and residents to visit the site to see operations first-hand. Harris also offered congratulations and recognition for Teachers Week; later in the meeting other council members acknowledged National Nurses Week and National EMS Week.
An unscheduled appearance by Maury Bateman was listed but Bateman declined to speak. The council heard an invocation led by Reverend Robert Felix of Chandler Presbyterian Church and recited the Pledge of Allegiance before opening business. The meeting concluded after the brief consent vote and announcements.
