St. Tammany school board urges end to LEAP, approves campus traffic enforcement and other routine measures

The St. Tammany Parish School Board on May 8 unanimously approved several resolutions, including a formal request that the Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) not renew the statewide LEAP assessment and that BESE replace it with a nationally norm-referenced test. The board also approved a resolution asking the parish council to pursue an ordinance giving law enforcement authority to enforce handheld-device and child-restraint violations in school zones and on school campuses.
The LEAP resolution, introduced and moved by Board Member Miss Hirstis and seconded by Board Member Miss Gallagher, instructs BESE and other state officials that the board believes the LEAP assessments do not provide a clear benefit for students when used for statewide comparisons and asks for a replacement aligned to nationally norm-referenced measures.
