McKeesport Juneteenth Committee asks district to participate in June 15 Riverfront Park event

Jessica Johnson, representing the McKeesport Juneteenth Committee, told the McKeesport Area School District board May 8 that the committee has partnered with the city for a larger Juneteenth event on June 15 at Riverfront Park and asked whether the district would participate.
Johnson said McKeesport has celebrated Juneteenth through grassroots efforts since 2020 and that the federal holiday was established in 2021. For the upcoming event, she asked the district to consider providing an informational table, activities or sponsorship and said she would share contact information with board members Matthew Keller and Latoya Wright.
Johnson said her firefighters’ union will participate and donate and that union members could help run activities such as fire-safety demonstrations. She mentioned interest in a dunk tank and suggested local elected officials might participate as fundraisers. She described the event as inclusive and said she hopes it grows in future years.
Board members thanked Johnson and indicated some would follow up. There was no motion or formal board action recorded on district participation during the meeting.
