Milan Area Schools board approves routine resolutions, hires and WISD representation in unanimous votes

Milan Area Schools Board of Education on May 7, 2025, voted unanimously on several routine items including an educator appreciation resolution, approval of minutes and bills, designation of representatives for the Washtenaw Intermediate School District (WISD) biennial election, approval of a new high school science teacher and certification of FCI graduates contingent on completion of graduation requirements.
The board approved a resolution recognizing educators for Educator Appreciation Week. Board member Farrow moved the resolution and Board member Gutierrez seconded the motion; the board then voted 6-0 to adopt it.
Board members also approved the minutes of the April 23, 2025, regular meeting (motion by Pryor; support by Gutierrez) and approved bills and reimbursement of expenses (motion by Farrow; support by Burdett). Board members cited follow-up answers from finance staff about several credit-card charges and checks before voting.
On board organization, the board designated two members as the district’s electoral representative and alternate for the Washtenaw Intermediate School District June 2, 2025, biennial election. Board member Murray moved and Board member Ferrell supported the motion to name Board member Gutierrez and Board member Pryor as the designated representative and alternate; the motion carried 6-0. Board members clarified that the board will finalize who to instruct those representatives to vote for at the May 20 meeting once WISD candidate information is complete.
The board approved a personnel action naming Christopher West as a Milan High School science teacher effective for the 2025–26 school year (motion by Farrow; support by Burdett). West was present with family when the board took the vote; the motion carried 6-0.
The board also approved the list of FCI graduates as presented in attachment C, contingent on each graduate’s completion of all graduation requirements (motion by Pryor; support by Gutierrez). Board members noted the district’s role in offering the diploma through the FCI program and that no K–12 general education funds were used to support it.
Votes were recorded as 6 yes, 0 no for each recorded motion. No motions failed or were tabled during the meeting.
Less formal items discussed elsewhere on the agenda — including a first reading of the WISD 2025–26 budget and hiring-timeline updates for administrative positions — were not decided by motion at this meeting and will return for later action.
