Petaluma trustees amend layoff list after Budget Advisory Committee finds Measure E funds to restore elementary nurse

The Budget Advisory Committee, which met twice in the past month, recommended using about $400,000 of unallocated Measure E elementary parcel tax revenue to reinstate one elementary nurse position and to add an additional instructional aide at each elementary school site. "The committee voted, 8 in favor with 1 abstention to use the Measure E funds to reinstate the elementary nurse position and add additional instructional assistance at each elementary school site," a Budget Advisory Committee representative told the board.
The recommendation came as the board considered agenda item 15.10.1 (Resolution 2425-B55), final action on decisions not to reemploy certificated employees for the 2025–26 school year. Staff presentation to the board identified four certificated positions tied to the proposed nonreemployment list; the list included administrative and certificated roles and one certificated school nurse. After discussion about the committee—s recommendation and funding availability, a trustee moved to approve an amended resolution that excludes the certificated nurse from nonreemployment. The amended resolution passed.
Amanda (Chief Business Officer) advised trustees the Measure E allocation identified by the committee is expected to recur for eight years unless the district elects otherwise. "This is funding that we will receive for eight years unless the board elects to go out," Amanda said during the discussion, explaining the parcel tax timeline and the district's prior allocations for Measure E. Board members acknowledged the nurse had been prioritized by families and staff earlier in the year and that reinstating the position addressed an identified need.
Board President Maddie Cloud opened and closed the public portions of the agenda item; no members of the public addressed the board on the item during the meeting.
Next steps include updating the district personnel list and incorporating the committee—s recommendation into the district—s budget documents and implementation planning. The board did not specify an implementation timeline during the meeting.
