Resident urges district-based council representation to help new residents identify candidates

Springville — Joseph May, who said he and his family moved to Springville about 11 years ago, used a late public comment spot to urge the council to create clearer district-based representation or other mechanisms to help new residents know who is running for council and whom to contact.

May, who said he is an attorney and active voter, said he and his wife are engaged in elections but struggle to find information about candidates when they are new to town. He proposed that council members represent discrete areas of the city so residents could get to know the candidate for their neighborhood, see them at local events and have easier access to ask questions about development or neighborhood issues.

May framed the suggestion as a transparency and civic‑engagement measure and cited a development east of Meadowbrook Elementary as an example of a project he did not understand and wished he had a clear local council contact to ask.

Council response: The mayor thanked May for his suggestion, said staff would take it under consideration and encouraged residents to reach out directly to council members and staff; the mayor noted that individual residents contacting council members frequently leads to changes or follow-up actions when problems are raised.

Quote: “I think there's a way that the city could improve the access for information about who's running for city council, who's running for mayor,” May said. “I think there's a way this is my proposal … where a member of the city council comes from each district.”

Next steps: The mayor said staff will work with city elections staff to consider the recommendation ahead of the upcoming election cycle.
