Council approves contract to upgrade Avalon and Gardena traffic signal
Summary

The City Council voted unanimously on May 6 to award a construction contract for Project No. 1667 to upgrade the traffic signal at Avalon Boulevard and Gardena Boulevard.
Public Works staff said the intersection — a north–south arterial (Avalon) crossing an east–west collector (Gardena) in northern Carson — experiences significant delays and deficient levels of service. The approved work includes new dedicated left-turn phases for northbound and southbound approaches, a video detection system, emergency-vehicle preemption, upgraded safety lighting and pedestrian head upgrades.
Director of Public Works Dr. Arlington Rogers said updated signal controllers will be programmed to optimize vehicle, pedestrian and bicycle movements and reduce delays. The council member who moved the staff recommendation highlighted the expected improvement in intersection level of service and safety for pedestrians.
The motion to award the contract was moved and seconded; the electronic vote was unanimous.
What happens next: Staff will execute the contract and begin construction work and signal programming as scheduled.
