High-school CTE students present diesel, film and Challenge program to Prescott Unified board

Prescott High School students Grayson Schwartz and Jack Buckley presented to the Prescott Unified governing board on May 6 about their Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs and a recent Challenge Program trip to the San Juan River.
Grayson, a sophomore in the district’s diesel program, described hands-on coursework in preventative maintenance, brakes, steering, electrical systems and transmissions. He said the program runs Monday–Thursday and that more than half the time is lab-based learning in a full-scale diesel shop. Grayson told the board the experience has helped him work on family vehicles and increased his interest in technical work.
Jack, a freshman in Film and Media Arts (FMA), described studio work in the district’s Badger Media studios, daily announcements production, and a first-place SkillsUSA video his team produced under teacher Mr. Tolle. Both students and staff also summarized the annual Challenge Program trip; participants prepared meals, rigged boats and did field ecology and history lessons while on a multi-day river trip.
CTE instructors and board members praised the programs for giving students trade skills and “grit” outside the traditional classroom. Principal and staff thanked the students for their presentations and noted the programs help students socialize, gain practical experience and prepare for careers or further training.
