The administration recommended reinstating a Teach For America partnership that places Teach For America core members at Blackburn Middle School for summer school and pre-induction training. Administration said the program will support summer instruction and give core members pre-service experiences at the site.
Officials told the board the partnership was a successful pilot last year and that Blackburn also serves as the district’s extended-year site for exceptional-education scholars. The administration said mentor teachers will support both the core members and students.
Board members asked whether recent AmeriCorps funding cuts would affect the program and whether Jackson Public Schools would be required to make up any funding gaps. Administration replied that the AmeriCorps educational award for members is a Teach For America responsibility and that any funding cuts to AmeriCorps would not require JPS to subsidize the program. The district said it will support mentor teachers and house the program at Blackburn but not provide AmeriCorps awards.
