Two downtown residents asked the Wylie Planning and Zoning Commission during the meeting on May 6 to help resolve parking requirements that are blocking a planned event center in a former firehouse on South Birmingham Avenue.
Shantel McMurian said she and partners recently formed an LLC and leased the old firehouse at 109 South Birmingham to use as an event center for community groups, including American Legion and Juneteenth events. "Because of the size of the building and the occupancy of it, that the parking requirements aren't there for us to have the place," McMurian said, adding the group hoped the commission could help them "merge those two" parking areas to meet the site's needs.
McMurian told commissioners the building abuts a neighboring property with eight parking spaces and that downtown surface parking is used by others, including a nearby church, but has not been available to the proposed event center. She said the additional space is needed for events and delivery services for gatherings.
The chair indicated the commission could not respond during non‑agenda public comment but that staff could look at the issue and follow up after the meeting. A staff member confirmed staff would meet with the speakers to discuss next steps.
No formal application or motion was taken at the meeting; the remarks were made during the public comment portion and left as a staff follow‑up item.
