PRL staff report national accreditation progress, park dedications and facility reopenings

Parks, Recreation & Libraries staff updated the commission on several department milestones on May 5, including an accreditation site visit, park dedications and upcoming facility reopenings.
Jill Geller, PRL director, told commissioners that an accreditation team visited last week and recommended the department as passing all 54 standards evaluated during the three-day review; she said the recommendation will be heard by the National Board at the National Recreation and Park Conference in September. Geller also said the department is again a national Gold Medal finalist (population class II, 150,000–400,000), a distinction this department has held for multiple years.
Staff recapped the Weber Park rededication on April 12, which drew more than 200 attendees across a morning dedication and a youth clinic with the Sacramento Kings. Geller said Denio Family Park will have a dedication in mid-May (staff were preparing areas for the ceremony and used goats for vegetation clearing ahead of the event) and that Johnson Pool, currently in renovation, is scheduled to reopen this summer with new features; the mural funded in partnership with Union Pacific will be installed after the pool reopens.
Commissioners congratulated staff and thanked them for outreach and partnerships; commissioners also noted the value of including commissioners in accreditation meetings. These items were informational and no commission action was required.
