District honors 2025 Teacher of the Year and dozens of student state contest winners

Board and district leaders recognized Alex Wharton as Berkeley County’s 2025 Teacher of the Year and celebrated many students who placed first at HOSA and FBLA state leadership conferences.
The board recognized the 2025 Berkeley County District Teacher of the Year, Alex Wharton, a special‑needs teacher at Berkeley High School. Dr. Susan Gellman (Division of Academics and Innovation) and Jennifer Crowley (Director of Curriculum and Instruction) introduced Wharton and described classroom practices observed during the selection process, including a collaborative, project‑style lesson in which students analyzed whether they could save enough to buy a car before graduation.
Wharton spoke briefly, thanked the district and framed the recognition as both an honor and a responsibility to continue serving students and educators.
The board also recognized numerous students and clubs who won first place at HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) and FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) state leadership conferences. Names and schools were read aloud for winners from Berkeley Middle, Cane Bay High, Hanahan High, Philip Simmons High, Berkeley High, Timberland and other schools; district staff thanked club sponsors and coaches. The recognitions concluded the “difference makers” portion of the agenda and the board posed for photos with the honorees.
These recognitions were ceremonial; no board action beyond acknowledgment was required.
