Central SD 13J board hears second-reading update on early-entrance policy JEB; community poll trending in favor

Central School District 13J trustees received a second-reading update May 5 on policy JEB, the district policy governing early entrance to kindergarten, and were told staff are collecting additional community feedback before a final decision.
Superintendent Byron Kubista told the board the district has historically averaged one to five early-entrance requests per year and described assessment procedures that consider both academic and social-emotional factors. Kubista said a district poll of community members returned 36 respondents who favored keeping the policy; staff plan one more ParentSquare quantitative poll and will summarize findings in the Friday report ahead of the next meeting.
Kubista said staff are also collecting written comments and will meet with elementary principals to discuss administrative rules (AR) that would clarify assessment procedures and social-emotional considerations. He said the district is considering whether to keep the policy as written, or to retain the policy while changing the administrative rule to specify how academic and social-emotional assessments will be applied.
Board members asked how outreach was conducted; Kubista said the district shared the poll via ParentSquare and placed a link prominently on the district website. Kubista said staff will present quantitative poll results and highlight notable qualitative comments at the next meeting’s action items, and that the third reading and possible final action will follow the public comment period.
The board received the update as information; staff said they plan to bring assessment highlights and any AR revisions back to the board for discussion and potential final action.
