The Fayetteville City Council approved a motion to provide additional funding so Crime Stoppers’ reward offers can be increased to $5,000 for certain cases. The motion, made by Councilman Thompson, directs the city to provide the difference between Crime Stoppers’ standard $2,000 payout and a requested $5,000 award for qualifying tips.
Duncan Hubbard, representing Crime Stoppers, told council the organization is a nonprofit that funds rewards through fundraising — its barbecue fundraiser at Dogwood was cited as the largest source — and that the board uses a point system to scale payouts by crime seriousness. Hubbard said Crime Stoppers pays tips after an arrest is made and that the group supports multiple local law-enforcement agencies, including Fayetteville and neighboring jurisdictions.
Council members said the supplement is intended for high-profile or high-impact cases where incentivized tips can produce rapid leads. Councilman Thompson moved that the city provide the additional $3,000 per qualifying case; council members supported the motion, which carried on a voice vote. The council asked Crime Stoppers to coordinate on criteria for which cases will receive the higher award and to return as needed for administrative details.
