The Gilroy City Council voted to award a $243,076 contract to William Duff Architects on May 5 to provide architectural design services for renovations at two existing fire stations.
John Dowdy of Public Works presented the project, saying the work covers Chestnut and Los Animas stations (not the new Santa Teresa site) and focuses on modernizing living conditions, accommodating mixed-gender crews and changing workforce needs, and performing seismic assessments. The city’s capital improvement program (CIP) includes both design and construction funding, and the design contract includes a $20,000 time-and-materials allowance to assist during contractor selection and bid preparation.
Council members asked about the seismic scope and funding for construction. Staff said each station will receive a seismic assessment; the CIP currently includes roughly $1.5 million per station for construction, though Council acknowledged this may not cover all work and that scope adjustments or additional funding could be required. The city attorney and staff also noted a parallel design-build RFP will be issued for the Santa Teresa station later in the year.
A motion to approve the contract, including authorization for the city administrator to execute related documents, passed on a roll call vote; all present councilmembers voted yes.
Staff said next steps are to proceed with detailed design, prepare construction bid documents and then bring those bids to council for construction authorization.
