Lima City Council adopted Resolution 4-25 on first reading to honor Mary Stiefelton for her long service with the coalition of churches’ United Pantry (CUP). Councilors praised Stiefelton’s volunteer leadership, her role obtaining 501(c)(3) status for CUP and her organization of food distribution during the COVID‑19 pandemic.
Councilor Glenn thanked Stiefelton for “taking that time out with the people who’s in need” and for maintaining a welcoming presence for clients. Councilor Thompson said the pantry “has been a place that has always felt comfortable and inviting” and noted Stiefelton’s heavy personal workload coordinating volunteers. Councilor Jordan and others described the pantry’s growth and the increase in clients served under Stiefelton’s leadership; Jordan cited an average of about 1,200 clients per month at the time he last saw the numbers.
Stiefelton accepted the honor and said she “did not do this task for any accolades” but because “it was near and dear to my heart,” noting her belief that feeding hungry people helps them be more productive in work and learning.
The resolution passed on first reading by a recorded vote of 7–0.
