City Manager Robin alerted the Aberdeen City Council May 5 that FEMA is beginning a new floodplain remapping process that will require the city to recertify its levee and may substantially change the local floodplain boundaries.
Robin said the remapping uses different science and will require the city to participate in a recertification process. She told the council staff met with the Army Corps of Engineers via Zoom and that the work is expected to take roughly 18 months to conclude. "If we don't recertify, it will significantly change the floodplain in Aberdeen," Robin said.
Robin said the city will likely need technical assistance and will “probably be coming in to look at hiring a consultant to provide some data our staff cannot do,” and that there will be costs associated with that work. Council members were informed the process could affect properties and regulatory requirements and that staff will report back as the mapping proceeds.
