Committee refers Talbot Trail naming to advisory committee, preparation for council action

The Government Operations Committee on May 5 referred a proposed naming of a section of Trail 5 as "Talbot Trail" to the Advisory Committee on Racial Equity, Inclusion and Human Rights and will place the item on the City Council agenda if the advisory committee raises no objection.
Parks staff said the proposal would name a recently completed section of trail that connects the end of Sylvan Road to Jisco Water Avenue — the portion identified as Trail 5 in the 2008 Bangor Trails Report — in honor of Miss Talbot. The Parks and Recreation and Harbor Advisory Committee reviewed the request and recommended the designation to the committee.
A councilor asked whether the city's revised naming policy requires referral to the equity advisory committee. Staff said the advisory committee was scheduled to meet the next day and that staff had been in contact with the Talbot family. The committee moved and seconded referral; in discussion the mover clarified that the referral would go first to the advisory committee and then to council, barring objection.
The committee voted to refer the naming request; the matter will appear on the next City Council meeting agenda for consideration.
