City planning staff told the Salinas Historic Resources Board that the city's permanent Mills Act program application period opened May 1 and will remain open through July 31, Planning Manager Grant Leonard said during the May 5 meeting.
Leonard said the planning department will prepare outreach materials to promote the Mills Act program and ensure board members are aware that the application window is open. The Mills Act program (a property‑tax contract program for historic property owners) will be administered under the city's permanent Mills Act program rules adopted last year, he said.
Staff also said the consulting team for the historic survey update will hold a first community workshop on May 7 in the same room, focused on gathering information for a historic context statement and neighborhood input. Leonard said the workshop will welcome photographs and addresses and that the consultant can scan materials offered by the public.
On proposed downtown projects, board members asked about the status of a potential demolition at 3438 Soledad Street; Leonard said there was no update and that the item remained on his plate to follow up.
Board members and staff said they will present the city's Chinatown revitalization work and TEF Design renderings at the California Preservation Foundation conference in Sacramento; Leonard and Chair Hirihara were invited, and the presentation was described in the meeting as taking place on a Friday starting at 10:30 (as stated by staff).
