Supervisors authorize historical marker for Findlay Cemetery after resident's request

HARRISON COUNTY, Miss. — The Board of Supervisors on May 5 authorized a resident's request to apply for and install a historical marker at Findlay Cemetery to preserve local history.
Michael Switzer, who said he has lived on John Clark Road since 1953, addressed the board and recounted the county's coastal lumber history and the origins of the Findlay community and cemetery. Switzer said the cemetery's earliest tombstone dates to 1890 and that stewardship of the parcel had passed through churches before Harrison County took maintenance responsibility in 1996. "History can get lost," Switzer said, and asked the board for authorization to apply for a historical marker and to install it; he said he would pay the marker cost of $2,780, which covers a marker with one‑inch lettering and post.
Board action A motion to authorize Switzer to apply for and install the marker was made and seconded; the board voted in favor. The county will provide whatever authorization is required for installation, and Switzer said he would prepare the application and pay for the marker.
Ending Switzer and the county agreed to follow up on installation logistics and scheduling.
