Jackson Public School District highlighted a series of community engagement events aimed at connecting families with district resources, celebrating staff and announcing graduation and hiring events.
The district said parent open houses and the JPS Joy Cruise brought families, community partners and staff together to explore available resources, view exhibits and learn about programs ranging from early childhood through the first year of college. Organizers said community partners were on hand to tour facilities and share services available during the school year and over the summer.
At one event Blackburn Middle School counselor Octavia Shelby received the Alice Clark award. Shelby, who has 21 years in education, told attendees she was surprised and “excited” and said her work as a counselor is focused on meeting student needs each day.
The district announced graduation ceremonies for the class of 2025 will be held at the Mississippi Coliseum on Tuesday, May 27, and Wednesday, May 28. Officials also promoted a job fair on Thursday, May 22, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Blackburn Middle School and listed roles they said they were hiring for, including child nutrition staff, certified teachers, custodians, police officers and administrators.
