Bureau of Contract Administration warns deep cuts would hamper wage-theft enforcement and small-business outreach

The Bureau of Contract Administration told the Budget and Finance Committee on May 2 that proposed budget cuts would eliminate positions at the city office responsible for wage-theft enforcement and certifications for public contracting, undermining the city's ability to investigate claims and to carry out new responsibilities such as an expanded hotel worker minimum-wage ordinance.
Inspector of Public Works John L. Reimer Jr., who leads the bureau, said BCA had identified offsets totaling roughly $2.5 million to restore many of the positions on the list the mayor proposed cutting. He said the bureau's request focuses on preserving wage-enforcement roles and internal infrastructure staff who process contracts and support inspections.
