Phoenix-Talent SD 4 recognizes school nurse named Oregon School Nurse of the Year and teacher who performed Heimlich

The board speaker said Carrie had previously been a contracted nurse for the district before joining the staff full time.
The board also recognized Jody Ammons for performing the Heimlich maneuver during a recent lunch-period emergency. According to the board’s account, Ammons “rushed to his side, asked if he was okay, called for help, and immediately performed the Heimlich maneuver, successfully dislodging the food that was blocking his airway.” The board praised her quick action and said a certificate was available at the district office.
Ammons spoke briefly at the meeting, saying, “Thank you for trusting me.” Board members and school principals joined in thanking both staff members; Heather Lowe, principal at Talent Elementary, and other principals spoke in appreciation of the staff.
Why it matters: the recognitions highlight staff roles in student safety and health. The board’s public commendations document both an external award (the statewide nurse honor) and a documented in-school rescue that staff said prevented a more serious outcome.
