Residents from the Pacific Park neighborhood urged the Santa Ana City Council to allocate funding in the 2025–26 budget to renovate the vacant Cypress Street Fire Station into a community center serving youth and seniors.
Celica Diaz and other neighborhood speakers told the council the building has sat vacant for about nine years and has become a public nuisance with vandalism, trespassing and fires. Speakers said they have worked with the city for years to repurpose the site and requested that staff revisit cost estimates so renovation can begin as soon as possible.
Several councilmembers expressed support during the workshop. Staff reported that the council previously allocated $1 million for study and design and that roughly $450,000 of that has been spent on plans and specifications. Public Works Director Nabil Saba told the council the current architect’s estimate to renovate and repurpose the structure as a PAL center and community center is about $4,000,000.
Councilmembers and neighborhood presenters said a restored facility could house youth programming, senior services and neighborhood meeting space, while removing a chronic nuisance from the block. Staff said it will explore funding options and grant opportunities and will include the project in upcoming one‑time funding discussions.
