Resident criticizes annexation laws at Huber Heights council meeting

During the public-comment portion of the May 15 Huber Heights City Council meeting, resident Jeff Morford of Bethel Township criticized Ohio annexation laws and urged reform.
Jeff Morford said he will “continue to speak about the injustice of annexation laws and procedures,” and called the current legal framework unfair to townships. He said, “We live in America. We are the greatest country on Earth because we are free. In my opinion, 20 years ago, Ohio lawmakers crippled all 1,309 townships across Ohio. Townships and its residents lost any legal ability to determine or choose the direction of their community.”
Morford told the council he intends to keep speaking out about annexations that, in his view, occur despite neighborhood opposition and that cities chose revenue over principle. The mayor interjected to remind the speaker of time limits; the speaker replied that he believed he had been cut short.
The comment was the only public comment on the agenda items that evening. Council did not take action in response to the remarks during the meeting.
