Stantec presents schematic design, schedule for Alvin ISD Elementary No. 23 at Cantera Creek

Stantec Architects presented schematic designs and a preliminary schedule for Elementary School No. 23 in Alvin ISD’s 2024 bond program, showing a site at Cantera Creek with a planned move-in in fall 2027.

Mark Jackson, principal at Stantec, told the board the project is in the construction document phase and that the district will put the job out to bid this summer; construction is estimated at about 17 months with the target move-in of fall 2027. “We’ve padded the schedule in order to hopefully prevent rushing to get into that building,” Jackson said.

Jackson walked trustees through a schematic site plan showing parent drop-off and bus loops, shared parking and a layout that puts large “lab” spaces (gym, cafeteria, music, art) grouped on one side and academic classrooms on the other. He said the site was master-planned to accommodate a future junior high adjacent to the elementary site and that on-site drainage feeds off-site detention to the south.

Trustees asked about natural lighting and window placement; Jackson said the design keeps high windows in the gym and uses windows rather than solar tubes where feasible, adding that a library would receive indirect light from both sides. Jackson also described a material palette and interior color opportunities for the flex and common areas.

Jackson said the district is pursuing a competitive, hard-bid (design-bid-build/CSP) procurement and that the team anticipates bidding and permitting through the summer with contractor award and construction to follow. He urged trustees to stop him to review any slide in more detail and answered board questions about window heights, site logistics and shared bus loops.
