State awards $16,000 to local conservation district; county hears update on water‑quality work

Lori Kirkbaum, representing the local Conservation District, told the Osage County Commission May 13 that the state has awarded the district approximately $16,000 to support hiring an education coordinator, and the district also received state money to recruit a field technician.
Kirkbaum described the district’s focus on water quality, soil health and cover‑crop work and said state and local partnerships allow cost‑share programs to help producers complete stream‑bank stabilization and other conservation projects. She said the district actively seeks grants and other funds that can be used locally and emphasized that agricultural landscape changes upstream benefit municipal and recreational lakes downstream.
Commissioners asked a few clarifying questions and said they would review the district’s requests during the county budget process.
