KDHE inspector flags erosion and planting problems at Marysville lagoon and wetland project

A Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) inspector visited the Marysville lagoon and wetland project and expressed concern about washouts, rutted access roads and what staff described as inadequate post‑construction planting. City staff said the planted material appears to be mainly wheat rather than the permanent grass cover KDHE expected.
Water and sewer supervisor Ken Bargmann told the council the site "looks like all we got planted was wheat, no grass," and said the inspector was unhappy with the condition of access roads and stabilization measures. Staff said the site currently has ruts and areas that are difficult to drive when wet.
Council discussion focused on immediate fixes to stabilize the site, re‑plant with appropriate seed and matting where needed, and then pursue cost recovery or remediation from the project engineer or contractor if the work did not meet specifications. Staff said they will place rock in the worst rutted areas to restore access and then follow with surface stabilization and seed or sod.
Council members requested staff document the condition, obtain contractor bids to complete the stabilization, and forward costs or claims to the engineer as appropriate. No final repair contract was awarded at the meeting; staff said they would keep the council apprised of progress and costs.
