Commission votes to enter executive session on personnel; schedules HR quarterly update

Geary County commissioners voted to go into executive session to discuss nonelected personnel performance and arranged for the HR quarterly update to be placed on the May 27 agenda.

Crystal Malchos, the county’s HR director, told the commission that department leadership and a staff member named Katie are prepared to present a quarterly update and requested a slot on the agenda two weeks from the meeting, specifically at 11:30 a.m. on May 27; Malchos also noted one department head would be out for that meeting.

Separately, a commissioner noted a legislative change: "apparently, that was removed from the final bill, so there is no 5 minute plus or minus for executive sessions. It's going to affect July 1," referring to an earlier proposal to allow a five-minute variance for executive-session return times.

Later in the meeting a motion was made to move into executive session "reference to the elected personnel performance" until 10:30 a.m. A commissioner said finance and legal staff should remain for the session. The commission then recorded an "Aye" and the executive session was approved; no further public details of the personnel discussion were disclosed in open session.
