Boyle County approves AmeriCorps application to fund one environmental educator

At a special‑call budget workshop, the Boyle County Fiscal Court approved a county application for one full‑time AmeriCorps member to support environmental education in local schools, Recycling Director Angie Muncy said.
Muncy told the court the one‑year, full‑time placement costs the county $8,925 and would cover 1,717 hours of service. “It’s a real big bargain,” Muncy said of the federal AmeriCorps placement, adding the county would provide basic workspace and equipment while AmeriCorps covers benefits. She said the role is focused on environmental education and not on manual recycling labor.
Muncy said Kentucky’s environmental education agency (KEEC) and AmeriCorps are partners in placing members and that federal funding changes could affect the pool of available members. The agency expects to announce awards in June and, if funded, recruitment and placement would likely occur in August or September and be reflected in next year’s budget, Muncy said. She noted a short application turnaround and said the application deadline had been updated from the 12th to “the 16th.”
The court approved the application on a motion by Mr. Collins and a second by Mr. Sleeper. On the recorded roll, the presiding judge stated he abstained because he had been out of the room; the motion carried.
Muncy said the county has not previously hosted an AmeriCorps environmental member during her time with the office and that the placement would expand school outreach capacity for recycling and environmental education. Court members raised no additional conditions when they approved the application.
The court instructed staff to submit the application by the stated deadline and to coordinate with finance staff to include the potential position in next year’s budget if the award is made.
