Two seniors who serve on the district’s Youth Equity Advisory Committee updated the board May 8 on student-led priorities and recent events.
Britney, a senior at Clackamas High School, and Gustavo Baraza, a senior at Milwaukie High School, described activities including orchestra and theater competing at state, REAP mental‑health awareness week (May 19–23), upcoming senior events and athletics districts. They also said the committee recommends AP study halls, SAT/ACT prep, more water‑bottle refill stations and clearer classroom expectations to reduce chronic absenteeism and classroom disruption.
On the district’s cell‑phone policy, which uses Yonder pouches to limit phone use during class, both students praised the change. Gustavo said it “allows kids to interact once again on an emotional level away from screens,” and Britney said she enjoys having electronics put away because it supports conversations and social skill development.
Board members thanked the students, highlighted the committee’s data‑driven approach — including YouthTruth survey analysis — and commended student leadership. Vice Chair Beneloga and Director Dobson noted the committee includes middle‑school members and praised its focus on practical ideas and measurable goals.
Students said food‑security issues informed their recommendations for breakfast availability and salad‑bar expansion; they also suggested hiring more diverse staff and offering accessible mental‑health support. The board did not take formal action at the meeting but recorded the committee’s suggestions for staff follow‑up.
