Dorchester County Council adopts senior property tax credit for qualifying residents

The Dorchester County Council voted unanimously on May 6 to approve Bill 2025-5, establishing a qualified senior citizen property tax credit for eligible county residents.
County staff outlined the eligibility criteria discussed during the hearing: a qualifying resident must be a full-time resident (more than six months per year), have legal interest in the property, have a net worth excluding the residence not exceeding $200,000, have a combined gross household income below $60,000, and have a property assessment below $300,000. Council members said the measure was intended to provide property tax relief to residents on fixed incomes who are “on a razor’s edge” financially.
After discussion, council members called for a roll-call vote. The recorded votes were yes from Councilman Travers, Councilman Detmer, Councilman Kramer, Councilman McNichols, and the council president (all recorded as yes), resulting in a unanimous approval.
Council members and several public commenters characterized the credit as an immediate hedge for vulnerable elderly residents and thanked staff for drafting the proposal. County staff said the program will be administered consistent with state property-tax credit processes and eligibility verification by the State Department of Assessments and Taxation where applicable.
The ordinance passed on May 6; council staff said implementation steps and an outreach plan for eligible residents will follow.
