Board reappoints Margaret Curran and appoints Robert Sandoval to Planning Commission

After interviewing four candidates for two at‑large vacancies on the Marin County Planning Commission, the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday reappointed incumbent Margaret “Peggy” Curran and appointed Robert Sandoval.

Carla Kakmar, assistant clerk, explained two at‑large seats were open after recent term conclusions. The board interviewed four finalists who had been advanced from a larger applicant pool: incumbent Margaret Curran (via Zoom), Jose (Jay) Jimenez, Sam Rodriguez and Robert Sandoval.

Candidates addressed questions about applying state mandates in land‑use decisions, balancing neighborhood character with multifamily affordable housing, coastal program considerations and the time commitment required to serve. Curran emphasized public education and trying to find “win‑win” outcomes when state law constrains local discretion; Sandoval said he would weigh broader public good while respecting local community character.

Following public comment, supervisors individually announced their preferences. Supervisors Moulton Peters, Rodoni, Colbert and President Sackett supported reappointing Margaret Curran; a majority selected Robert Sandoval for the second at‑large seat. Supervisor Lukin had indicated different preferences but the board approved the motion to reappoint Curran and appoint Sandoval. Supervisor Colbert moved the appointments; Supervisor Rodoni seconded. The motion carried by voice vote.
