Baldwin Park reports successful Springfest; inclusive egg hunt drew larger than expected turnout

City recreation staff reported that the April 19 Springfest and egg hunt was well attended and included a new inclusive egg‑hunt area for children with special needs, program supervisor April Rojo told the commission on May 5.
“Springfest and egg hunt was held on Saturday, April 19. It was a very successful event, really well attended,” Rojo said, describing a free program that ran about 8 a.m. to noon and offered inflatables, arts and crafts, a bubble zone and a butterfly exhibit provided by Flutter by Ranch.
Rojo said staff purchased more than 22,000 eggs for the event and organized five egg‑hunt corrals: an inclusive area for children with special needs and four age‑based corrals for ages 1–3, 4–6, 7–9 and 10–12. She said the inclusive corral used sensory toys and that online registration showed more than 50 enrollments; staff estimated roughly 100 participants attended the inclusive session the day of the event.
A commissioner who attended the younger corral suggested the city increase corral size and create more separation for parents to prevent crowding. Rojo said staff plan incremental improvements next year, including holding the inclusive hunt before the other groups and creating a parent set‑back so young children have room to gather eggs.
Other event details included a magic show by performer Artie Looney, complimentary hot chocolate from In‑N‑Out, a photo booth with costumed characters and photo opportunities with the event bunny. Rojo said staff will share event photos with commissioners by email.
