Parents say coach dismissal, expedited hiring disrupted Cheltenham High athletes' recruiting visits

Multiple Cheltenham High School parents told the board during public comment that the recent dismissal of the football coach and the district’s subsequent hiring process left student athletes without consistent support during college recruitment season.

Tara Knox, who identified herself as a parent of a junior and a football parent, said the timing of the firing and the lack of a transition plan caused students to miss recruiting opportunities. “My son, as well as 30 rising seniors, a few juniors and sophomores missed a total of 4 recruitment visits because of this,” Knox said. She also told the board she was concerned about the new coach being appointed without an interview: “we now have a coach that's been hired that wasn't even interviewed…and the excuse we were given was that he's a CEA contract member because he's a teacher in the school and that he didn't have to be interviewed.”

Dana Burnley, another parent, said the disruption could change students’ trajectories. “He has 7 post education after high school full scholarship offers to division 1 schools,” Burnley said of her son, and she described visits that produced no outcomes because there was no effective point-person during the transition. Several parents said students circulated petitions asking for a fair interview process and that those petitions were not addressed.

Parent Chawan Cowans said some athletes were emotionally affected by the change and that a petition from players requesting a fair interview process was not acted on. Cowans also raised concerns about monitoring academic eligibility during spring sports and said academic eligibility reporting had not been provided under the new athletic director; Cowans warned that playing ineligible athletes could lead to forfeitures or probation for the athletic programs.

No board action on coaching assignments or hiring processes was recorded during the meeting. Board members and administrators did not make a substantive public response to the speakers on the record; staff directed commenters to follow up with the superintendent’s office for next steps. A district staff member did interrupt one speaker to enforce the five-minute time limit for public comment.

The matters raised in public comment touched on district personnel processes, collective-bargaining language and athletic eligibility procedures. Parents asked for clarity on how the district applies the Cheltenham Education Association (CEA) contract to coaching assignments and for a fair interview process for coaching hires in the future.
