District closes bleachers after collapse; one injury reported, insurance and town to investigate

Cromwell School District officials said they have closed the portable bleachers used at district fields after a recent collapse that injured one spectator and prompted first-responder attention.
Superintendent Dr. Macri said the district closed use of all bleachers “until we look into it more” after a “freak accident” at a youth event. He said the district has been in contact with the injured person’s family and is working with Town Manager Salvatore, the fire chief, the police chief and the district insurer to assess damage and next steps. Dr. Macri said the district will pursue a walk-through with the insurer and consider short-term measures such as placing stakes or, if approved and budgeted, purchasing commercial replacement bleachers the district has previously requested.
Board members flagged additional safety concerns. One board member asked that, when the insurer inspects the site, officials also ask for fencing or other protections to reduce the risk of foul balls hitting spectators, and noted that a larger protective fence was effective at a JV game observed that night.
District officials said they are working with the town because the bleachers are used for community events and the incident occurred while families were watching children play. No timetable for repairs or replacement was presented at the meeting; the superintendent said the district and town leaders will “come up with a solution.”
