School committee approves sixth‑grade trip to RISD; $28 per student, waivers available

The Easton School Committee voted May 8 to approve out‑of‑state field trips for the district's sixth graders to visit Rhode Island museums in June.
Superintendent Dr. Cabral said the Ruby, Emerald and Sapphire teams (three sixth‑grade teams) will visit Rhode Island on separate days (June 10, June 11 and June 13) to see ancient Egypt exhibits and related material that aligns with social studies and art standards. The fee is $28 per student; the district noted funds are available to cover costs for students who cannot afford the trip.
Dr. Cabral explained the trip had been shifted from a prior plan to the Museum of Fine Arts because of transportation difficulties and that the trip aligns with curriculum units on gods, heroes and the hero's journey. Per district policy, any out‑of‑state field trip requires a special vote by the school committee.
A committee member asked whether it would be possible to adopt a standing policy to avoid repeated out‑of‑state votes for nearby Rhode Island trips; members agreed to explore whether the policy or regulatory framework allows a simpler path for proximate trips.
The motion to approve the trip was moved, seconded and passed by voice vote.
