Aurora committee backs federal water cybersecurity bill (Senate 1118, HB 2344)

Kathy summarized the Water Information Sharing and Analysis Center (Water ISAC) and said the bill—identified in the briefing as Senate bill 1118 with companion House bill 2344—would increase tools and resources for monitoring the water sector and improving preparedness for malicious acts and natural hazards. Kathy said Water ISAC was authorized in 2002 by the Bioterrorism Act and that the organization currently coordinates among water/wastewater trade associations, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency.
Kathy told the committee the bill would enhance Water ISAC’s ability to provide cybersecurity planning and preparedness resources to community water systems and publicly owned treatment works, and said national water organizations such as the Association of Metropolitan Water Agencies and the American Water Works Association strongly support the legislation.
Council members present verbally affirmed the city’s support on the record. Council member Hancock said, “I support council member,” and another committee member said, “I support as well,” as staff confirmed the city’s position of support.
