Animal Services Board highlights shelter outreach, new partnerships and proposed board changes

Beth Soderbergh, chair of the Flower Mound Animal Services Board, told council the board is pursuing new programming and structural changes to increase engagement and better leverage volunteer talent.
Soderbergh introduced board members and community partners and thanked staff and shelter leadership for running what she called “a five-star operation.” She highlighted events and collaborations over the past year, including the Easter Egg Scramble, Dog Eat Splash, Independence Fest participation, and the first Tales for Tails program in partnership with the Flower Mound Library and Friends of the Library. Soderbergh said children who read to kittens received a certificate they could redeem for a book at the library; she described the program as a collaboration that brought families to both the shelter and the library.
Soderbergh said the board formed a subcommittee to develop new recommendations to give the board “purpose” and increase retention of skilled volunteers. The subcommittee will present recommendations to the board on May 20 and later to council for consideration. The board also plans to request recognition elements for volunteers (name badges, shirts or polos) so members can represent the board distinct from general volunteers during public events.
Council members and staff applauded the shelter’s outreach work; a council member noted the Tales for Tails collaboration and encouraged expansion of such programs. Soderbergh said the board’s upcoming presentation on May 27 will outline a revised vision and recommended changes to the board structure and outreach plan.
No formal actions or votes were recorded during the update; Soderbergh asked for council support for proposed changes once the subcommittee report is finalized.
