Los Angeles — The Civil Rights, Equity, Immigration, Aging and Disability Committee confirmed Anna Karen Estrada to the Commission on the Status of Women after she described her background in community organizing and youth leadership programs.
"My name is Anna Karen Estrada, and I am honored to have been nominated by mayor Bass to serve on the commission on the status of women," Estrada told the committee. She said she grew up in the San Fernando Valley in a predominantly Latina community, was the first in her family to graduate from high school and college (political science, magna cum laude, California State University, Northridge), and currently works as a senior programs coordinator at Alliance for a Better Community. She cited past organizing with Planned Parenthood Los Angeles and work on youth civic participation.
Councilmembers praised Estrada’s community work and asked about her priorities and familiarity with the commission’s reports. Councilmember Rodriguez said, "The Commission on the Status of Women has had a really wonderful history here in Los Angeles… I just want to thank you for taking your lived experience and being willing to employ that dedication and volunteerism to this work," and asked what Estrada planned to champion. Estrada replied that she would seek greater representation and equitable opportunities for young women in underserved communities and said she was familiarizing herself with the commission’s work and would follow up with specifics.
The committee also noted receipt of Estrada’s financial disclosure form. The committee voted 5–0 to confirm the nomination. Votes recorded: Councilmember Martinez — yes; Councilmember Nazarian — yes; Councilmember Hidalgo — yes; Councilmember Rodriguez — aye; Councilmember Padilla — aye.
Estrada said she expected to use the position to expand opportunity, improve safety and increase representation in civic life for women and girls across Los Angeles. If confirmed by the full Council, the appointment will place Estrada on the commission’s roster to participate in its next meetings and initiatives.
