Board adjusts 2025–26 and 2027–28 school calendars to fix teacher‑day mismatch

The Saint Paul Public Schools Board of Education approved adjustments Tuesday to the 2025–26 and 2027–28 academic calendars after district staff discovered errors that would have left teacher work days misaligned with the district’s contract.

District staff told the board they had identified two extra staff work days in the 2025–26 calendar and one extra day in the 2027–28 calendar, partly as a calculation error and partly because leap‑year timing affected the day counts. The calendar committee reconvened and recommended changes designed to minimize disruption for families while aligning teacher duty days with the contract.

For 2025–26 the committee recommended changing Tuesday, May 26, 2026 to a no‑school, non‑duty day for staff and converting Wednesday, May 27, 2026 from a professional development day to a non‑duty day; the result keeps the student day total essentially unchanged but removes the excess staff day and avoids the pattern of “no school — school — no school” that parents objected to.

For 2027–28 the committee recommended changing a planned staff development day on Oct. 11, 2027 to a non‑duty day so the staff year totals 185 and student days remain aligned. The district said the changes were intended to maximize student contact days and reduce family disruption.

Board members asked whether the revision would affect planned professional development; staff said most PD is scheduled across the year and that adjustments would not create significant carry‑over work outside the contract. Director Vu voted against the calendar motion for 2025–26 and 2027–28; all other directors supported it. The motion passed 5–1.
