Staff outlines spring–summer public-art calendar, fellowship deadlines and upcoming Civic Center installations

Cultural affairs staff told the Las Vegas Arts Commission about events, open calls and project timelines for the public art program during the monthly staff report.
Mary Sabo and Laura Machado delivered an overview of community events and program work. Highlights included an artist reception for Bailey Anderson's Window on The Neon Lake (installation April 21–Sept. 19 on the First Street Art Trail), Art in the Park on May 10 at Rainbow Family Park, and the Celebrating Life 2025 award reception on May 29 at Charleston Heights Arts Center. Staff noted the Nevada Arts Council fellowships and an artist fellowship award (up to $5,000) have application deadlines of May 1, 2025.
Program updates: staff said three artists — David Fay, Ross Takahashi and Vision — have been contracted for the city's "3 on Main" rotating temporary-sculpture program and that those works will be installed this summer for a two-year run. The Civic Center Building interior commissions include work by Jig Depio (12-by-12 oil painting completed), Fawn Douglas (4-by-4 woven basket nearly finished), Valentin Jordinoff (9-by-8 painting completed) and Sebastian Corti (7-by-6 mixed-media work in fabrication). Staff said construction delays have shifted some installation timelines; one staff speaker said interior artworks are set to install in February (staff did not specify the year) and Civic Center Plaza artwork submittals are under engineering review with expected installation in June–August.
Conservation and outreach: staff reported an awarded vendor will begin restoration of the Paintbrush Gateway sculptures once the contract review is complete, and work to clean the Living Black Pillars by Chase McCurdy has been coordinated with conservation group RLA. The public art program recently hosted a contracting best-practices workshop for artists presented by student attorneys from UNLV's William S. Boyd School of Law; staff said the workshop was oversubscribed and survey responses were positive.
Logistics and schedule notes: staff reviewed the commission calendar (next meeting May 15 at 4 p.m.; commission dark in June and July) and announced a public-art tour for commissioners set for Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2025, with an additional spring 2026 tour to be scheduled. Staff asked commissioners to RSVP by July 1 if they wish to join the Oct. 29 tour.
