Carl said the city currently receives reimbursement at “37¢ on the dollar,” and he urged committee members to email their state representatives during the budget season.
Carl described the municipal services payments as longstanding reimbursements for services the city provides on land operated by the state — for example, hospitals or prisons — and framed the issue as an equity concern for Oshkosh and surrounding communities.
The committee also heard announcements about upcoming local events and volunteer opportunities, including a Pride volunteer signup, a veterans’ gravesite flag-placing event, mental-health programming and a Hmong Memorial Day festival in Oshkosh. Committee members were reminded that the May meeting is canceled and that the committee will hold its annual reorganization meeting in June; the committee was also told that a member, Liz, will be leaving when her term ends, creating a vacancy on the DEI committee.
