Historic Preservation Commission names award winners, announces conference sign-ups and training

The Historic Preservation Commission announced winners for its Historic Preservation Month awards and reminded commissioners about two upcoming preservation conferences and an awards luncheon.
Michael Howe, filling in for Commissioner Diane Seabrant, reported the results of the Commission’s nomination voting for the annual awards. He said there were no applicants in the bricks-and-mortar, City of Las Vegas business legacy, and historic media project categories. Friends of the Fort won the preservation education award. The advocacy award resulted in a tie; both Karen Livingston and the Hon. Richard Bridal will receive awards. Jonathan Ullman of the Mob Museum won the career achievement award. Howe also announced the Commission’s first Colleen Beck Archaeology, Paleontology and Indigenous Ethnography Award, given to the Nu'u Passats People's Garden installation at the Springs Preserve. Howe said the formal award ceremony will be held at the Commission’s May 28 meeting and will be followed by a luncheon.
Deputy Community Development Director Michael Cunningham, filling in for the director, said there were no director updates at this meeting. Howe reviewed the project-update list and encouraged commissioners who plan to attend the National Trust for Historic Preservation Pass Forward 2025 Conference in Milwaukee (Sept. 16–18) to notify staff by May 8. He also announced the National Alliance of Preservation Commissions’ summer short course (online, Aug. 20–21) and asked interested commissioners to reply to staff by the same deadline. Howe noted the awards luncheon will be held on the second floor at the NOW Cafe and that the catering will be provided by the Great Greek restaurant.
Vice Chair Laramie asked whether the two nominees who tied for the advocacy award would both receive awards; Howe confirmed they would. No public comments were made during the meeting on these items.
The Commission did not take additional formal action on the awards at this meeting beyond announcing the results; the awards will be presented at the May 28 meeting.
