United Nations spokesperson Steph said the UN does not have operational updates from the areas of recent clashes in Syria and is instead monitoring media and other reports. She described the situation as “very concerning” and said the UN has repeatedly stressed the importance of ensuring that national and interim authorities protect religious and ethnic minorities and civilians.
When pressed about recent alleged atrocities, a reporter asked whether the UN presumed responsibility concerns for interim authorities that replaced the previous government. Steph replied that interim authorities “have to hold up internationally recognized standards, notably, on the protection of civilians and their own civilians.”
The spokesperson said the UN continues to seek verified information and urged all actors to respect international humanitarian and human rights obligations. No new operational deployments or humanitarian corridors were announced during the briefing.
