United Nations spokesperson Steph said the secretary-general has spoken with senior officials in both India and Pakistan and “offered his good offices” amid rising tensions. Steph told reporters the secretary-general had spoken to the foreign minister of India and to Pakistan’s prime minister and that he will not travel unless both parties accept his offer of mediation.
When asked whether the secretary-general would travel to mediate, the spokesperson said travel would require “a clear message” that both countries accept his good offices. Steph reiterated that the secretary-general has engaged through phone calls and remains available to support de-escalation if both parties welcome UN mediation.
No new proposals or timelines for mediation were announced at the briefing.
