UN releases $16.6 million in anticipatory funding for drought response in Afghanistan

United Nations spokesperson Steph said the UN released $16,600,000 to help vulnerable communities in northern and northeastern Afghanistan mitigate the effects of an expected drought. Steph described the release as “the first and the largest anticipatory action against drought in Afghanistan.”
She said the package includes $6,600,000 from the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) and $10,000,000 from an Afghan emergency fund. The funds are intended to support cash assistance and activities to protect food security and livelihoods, including support for agriculture, livestock, water, sanitation, hygiene, health, nutrition and protection services.
Steph said Under-Secretary-General Tom Fletcher is in Afghanistan and that the UN and partners aim to deliver cash and other assistance “before the drought peaks in the coming months.” She said Fletcher met humanitarian partners in Kabul, including NGOs and women-led organizations, and would wrap up his visit the next day. No new operational modalities or binding donor pledges were announced during the briefing.
